Minopex is proud to be associated with the official opening of the R5.5 billion investment zinc mine, Gamsberg in the Northern Cape today.

The Gamsberg Mine near Aggeneys is located in the mining centre between Springbok and Pofadder and will contribute to job creation and skills development.

Gamsberg will exploit one of the largest known, undeveloped zinc ore bodies in the world and will comprise an open pit mine and a dedicated processing plant.

One of the main challenges in the construction of the Gamsberg Zinc Mine, was the lack of required skills in the local area. With training and skills development as one of Minopex’s key service offerings, we could assist Vedanta with the training of local Northern Cape residents.

According to Vedanta Zinc International CEO, Deshnee Naidoo, Gamsberg employed about 3 500 people during peak construction, largely from the region, which is home to about 12 000 people; in terms of investment, about 70% of the R5.6-billion Phase 1 capital investment was spent in South Africa.

A strong focus on local employment is being maintained throughout the project.
